hi e1.im a newbie here.went to atsion and hampton furnace on sunday...found something that looks like a piece of cannonball at hampton furnace..they didnt make cannonballs there did they ..i think just at batsto..might be a piece of iron slag...whatever it is its pretty heavy..i will take a pic and put it up to see if anyone knows what it is ...

Hi Nancy,
There is a lot of slag around Hampton Furnace but I don't think you could mistake slag for iron, which cannon balls would be made of. Slag is generally glass like and iron is, well, iron. It would be interesting to see the photo.

Nancy,

Many furnaces produced cannonballs, not just Batsto. During the War of 1812, New Jersey's iron furnace production peaked. I would think it doubtful that you found a "piece" of a cannonball, however, unless it had been one with a fuse in it to start. Even so, they are generally pretty easy to recognize.

If you could go back to the place where you saw it and photograph it, I'd be happy to identify it for you. And if it is something of interest, I can put you in touch with the right people to talk to about getting it to a musuem.

Just a quick look at the link it appears you chose the folder and not the photo to upload. I may be wrong on that but look your link over and it ends with a folder and not a .jpg or equivalent.

I altered the beginning of the link so if would not work

h??p://C/Documents%20and%20Settings/NANCY/My%20Documents/My%20Pictures/New%20Folder

So click on the button that says "manage attachments", and then click on the button that says "choose file". Navigate to the actual photo that has the .jpg or .gif and choose that. Then click on the top "upload" button and wait for it to upload. Then post the message.
