I started out on Monday morning at 10:00 A.M. with the intent of exploring the burnt areas of Raritan Ave and the Dutchtown areas. Since the fire opened up the areas to some markers that i always wanted to go to but were unaccessible before to me due to heavy foliage, the day was perfect yesterday for some exploring.
Besides my friend George, my stepson joined us yesterday for the first time, i traveled on Atsion Road from Tuckerton Road and my first stop was to view the Wharton Sign which on a past outing was innacurate with the acreage, i wrote to the Indian Mills Historical Society stating the error, and as you now can see with the following pic, the error has been corrected.
We then traveled further on Atsion Road making a right hand turn on the road to the Plastic Bridge, stopping for a while to let my son take in the sights, we then went to Raritan Avenue making a left hand turn from Plastic Bridge Road.
Traveling on Raritan and past the section where the road over the Saltar's Ditch is now repaired, we went to the Pipe Graveyard.
Upon further exploring in the area we then found this marker which has a number 68 on it, and the letters B and C for Burlington and Camden Counties.
Leaving the area it was now time to go to the Dutchtown area to view the Tri County Marker, i figured the easiest and shortest route was to continue on Raritan to Atsion Lake, upon arriving in the recreation area we then found out that the gate was locked out to Rt.206.
Traveling back on Raritan Avenue West to the Plastic Bridge Road, we made a right onto Plastic Bridge Road to Atsion Road, making a right onto Atsion Road to Rt.206. We then arrived at Rt.206 making a right going South to Dutchtown noticing the ongoing work happening at the Bridge over the Mullica.
Turning right off of Rt.206 at Nina's Cafe we then rode to the Jersey Central Tracks parking the Jeep in the area, i was the point man as usual, and in a short time we arrived at the Tri County Marker.
Another view of the Marker, viewing it in a surreal landscape.
We left the Burlington, Camden, and Atlantic County Marker returning to the Jersey Central Tracks with the intent of finding one more Marker in the area, and after a short walk we found this Marker with the year 1935 on it, we did not see any other Markings on it.
Then on the way back to the Jeep, and this pic is for the Herpers, we found this poor fellow in the middle of the Road. I do not know what species of Turtle it is.
Returning to the Jeep, we then traveled back out to Rt.206 and on the way i spied the following Stone, is this a destroyed Marker ?
It was then time to call it a day, we were thirsty and hungry, so since my kid just turned 21 we decided to stop here on Rt.206.
After enjoying pitchers of Yuengling Lager and two dozen smoker wings we then went home, upon arriving my wife was upset as i was covered with Black Soot from head to toe, this is the first time that i have ever been exploring in a burn area, the Sun was out, i found what i wanted to find.
The kid now wants to go to the Pines on our further outings, i finally got to enjoy some Beers with him, explore with him, we are still feeling the effects from the smoker wings, all in all what a great day to be in the Pines.
I would like to thank Guy and Scott for the info on the Tri County Marker, and Guy for his other accurate GPS readings on the other markers we found that day.
