Friends, I have a few questions...I am interested in doing some extended camping in the Pines, the Wharton State Forrest in the next few months...My first questions are these: Are there campgrounds where I can pay a reasonable fee to camp out for say a month?...I will be doing it in a simple manner, with a tent, some equipment and basic supplies...I would like to do this 'legally' if at all possible...What are you suggestions?...I will await replies before I go on to my next questions.

I seem to recall a limit of two weeks at a site, but I may be remembering poorly. Perhaps someone with a newer copy of the "Rules" could weigh in here. If "people" are not an issue, you might try a private campground. ("People" meaning noise, expense, and a carnival atmosphere. You could also write in "crowds", but not in a good way.) Another consideration is your needs. If you need facilities such as shower, laundry, or other bits of civilization you may prefer a private campground. If on the other hand, you don't mind "roughing it" and feel the only way to clean your arse is to fall into a stream while "conveiniently" holding a bar of ivory, you may be "Pine tolerable". (These are primative sites - no frills!) You might have to move at the two week limit, but you may be able to go to a different site or campground. Good luck and enjoy the "Pines".

If others were in your party. Each can take turns registering for a site in the state parks. This could extend your permitted time of stay.

I would imagine the longer you stay in one location the eyes will be watching you more closely.

Local governments have some concerns regarding "the homeless" taking up residence in the pines and at campgrounds.

The cabins at Atsion lake make a pretty comfortable and cheap base camp for exploration of the pines.

Bass River has lean-tos, cabins, and shelters too. Depends on your level of comfort. Atsion is more secluded as far as dwellings go but the main road is closer (traffic). Each has it's plusses and minuses. Sounds like you are looking for a primative site with a fire ring, pump, and outhouse. Most state sites will have these available. Check for fire restrictions before figuring on an open fire. Propane or alcohol stoves are fine for cooking during fire bans.
