The state fills certain lakes and streams with fish throughout the year for recreational fishing, supplying in-state and out-of-state anglers with a catch that natural spawning could not satisfy. The 600,000 trout released each year into New Jersey's waterways - including about 20,000 brook, brown and rainbow trout in the fall - allows a time-honored tradition to continue.

Very few of those "college educated" trout live very long once they are released. The trout are use to being fed with pellets at a certain hour (via a spreader and a pick up truck) and seem congregate around their release point. If anyone has the time, take a trip to the Pequest Hatchery and see how the trout are raised that are used to stock our waters. It is worth the drive.
