My first posting ever on this web-site.
I’m not sure where to post this thread so I picked here.
I have had many memorable moments in the PB’s. My family and I have camped, tubed, canoed, picnicked and many more things here. We have been doing Sunday morning outings visiting the ruins and streams this summer collecting ticks, chiggers and skeeter bites. Do you folks have a “can’t miss” locations that my 7 and 9 YO boys would like to see?

Thank you NASCAR

Guy, Yes I do.

You know, too many locals have no idea how lucky they are to have the PB’s in their back yard. Most have never explored any of it. I appreciate the pines more now then ever before. My wife just bought me another book (Iron in the Pines) this week on the history of the PB’s it’s an old book printed back in 1957, 2 years before I was born. Fascinating is the word that describes our role in the revolutionary and other wars.
I want my 2 young boys to also find appreciation for the natural resources we have. The hard thing is to keep things interesting so that they enjoy the adventure. So I try to fill in the stories with facts and folk lore.
I’m also looking for place to take photographs.

Thanks
Ron

Hi njpbron and welcome aboard!

I assume you've already visited Harrisville and Brooksbrae since you mentioned ruins?

You might find a visit to the Atlantic County Park at Estell Manor interesting if you've never been down my way: http://www.aclink.org/PARKS/mainpages/estell.asp

There are some very interesting ruins of the Belco facilities there, and many miles of trails which used to be the roads and railroad beds connecting them. For some history see this:

http://www.aclink.org/PARKS/mainpages/historic.asp

Enter the North end of the park on Artesian Well Road and drive about a mile to the parking area then follow any of the trails from there. You should stop by the Nature Center at the main (South) entrance of the park first to pickup a trail map. You can also see the Estellville Glasworks ruins at South end of the park, but they're in a fenced off area which is less wild:

On your way down from Burlington County you could also visit the Weymoth Furnace ruins:

Try using the search function on this site to find further discussion of these places.

Mentioned in “Iron in the Pines” is Harrisville which Boyd also mentioned in the previous post. Take the book with you and see if you can picture what it looked like years ago. If you really like the place try to pick up a copy of the book titled “Harrisville” by Angelo N. Dellomo Jr. on eBay. It will cost you though!

A few miles down the dirt road across from Harrisville is Martha Furnace, also in the book.

Nice post Boyd! That should keep them busy for quite a while.

It's just you :)

Seriously, I get three pages of posts on "brooksbrae". Double check your spelling, and you might also display as posts instead of threads because that will make it a little easier to find what you're looking for IMO. Just to be clear, what "search option" are you using? I'm refering to the link near the top of the page in the beige bar which also includes User CP, FAQ, Members List, Calendar, etc.

Here are a few of the results I got:

http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/showthread.php?t=3352&highlight=brooksbrae

And see Ben's directions here: http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/showthread.php?t=1130&highlight=brooksbrae
