The ever-looming concern that an errant cigarette or lightning strike could touch off a massive wildfire like those in Colorado is a fact of life for residents in or near the Pine Barrens.
The first thing that comes to mind for Joe Morrison of Waterford when he sees the smoke rising and trucks racing into the woods is simple.
“How fast I can get the hell out of here?” Morrison said.
He watched from a comfortable distance on Thursday. But last year a fire made it within a few miles of his property — too close for comfort for him. For many of those who live near the Pine Barrens, the fear is real.
