So, yesterday was nearly a complete bust. I should have known better than to think I could actually move from north to south in NJ on Thanksgiving weekend, but I'm an idiot and tried anyway. After spending hours trying to get down the TP I finally made it to Quaker Bridge in the late afternoon as the sun was setting. While waiting for some friends (locals who had been out enjoying the woods all day while I was cursing license plates from five different states) I was wandering around near the cellar hole across the road from the bridge (potentially that of the old tavern? not sure) when I stubbed my toe on this, lying in the grass near the stump of a blown-down pine.
The item is an iron hinge, about 18" - 20" long, with one square spike rusted into place. Difficult to get a feel for texture because of the heavy corrosion, but from the shape it appears hand-crafted. Too small to be a barn door hinge, but perfect for a shutter or entryway door. A few more shots...
The light was very poor, so only the flash shots came out. After photographing the item was placed back near where it was found. I have been over this area before and haven't seen this piece. I certainly could have missed it, but would tend to believe it was unearthed recently somehow. I didn't see any fresh signs of digging about.
