There was ice on my water bucket Saturday morning....brrrr!

I enjoy waking up to mornings like the one you are describing while camping! It is the combination of being asleep in a toasty sleeping bag and taking in the chilled air that is recharging. I may be a kook for thinking this way, but I still like it.

My wife was not prepared for the chill & slept in the car!

I have been in that position before and can relate to her suffering. It was a September canoe trip by Dingmans Ferry. It was in the mid eighties during the day and dropped below freezing by the early morning. I was miserable and practically slept on the coals. We were all caught off guard that night. It may have been the sipping whiskey.

I just returned from business trip, and flying into Minneapolis to make a connection you could see that many of the lakes were still partially frozen. Personally, I like this cool spring. Last year was way too hot and plants bloomed very early. Then we had a late killing frost that did a lot of damage out in the woods.

This also happened in 2010, I believe the hard frost was during early May. Between these two years, it has nearly wiped out many of the large mountain laurel bushes in the woods down here.

Monday night I covered my garden, and on Tuesday morning I noticed quite a bit of frost on the roof of my car. Not thinking it casued any problems I pretty much forgot about it. Tonight, I was looking at the two Maple Trees in my yard and they looked pretty poor so I walked over and checked them out. It is obvious from looking at them I had Black Frost. Almost all of the leaves look like this.

Guy: I saw scattered frost damage on my land last week too - have been meaning to follow up. I would estimate that about 20% or 25% of the newly sprouted laurel leaves were killed. This is a lot better than last year when the frost killed virtually all of them. I also saw damage to a variety of other things, even some young oak leaves.

But since the spring came so much later this year, the damage was limited. Looks like it may have gotten a bit colder at your home than it did here though.

Here are a couple bad cellphone pictures, but they give some idea of the frost damage to the young Mountain Laurel leaves. There was no apparent pattern. As you can see, one cluster of leaves is damaged while another right next to it is fine.
