I guess due to it's relation to water movement in the Pine's environment, I'll put this here. Ever since Scott & Guy tuned me on to the USGS site, which is cool for checking the stations that are all over out there, I've been looking at my local stream. It is now posted that this site will be shut down in October '06.
Anyone here know why one of these would be shut down? This one seems pretty relevant to some other waterways.

I know the man in charge and will write him. He actually is related to a member of this site.

George,

Can you send me the link to the page that says that? I don't see anything saying it is shutting down.

Took my boys for a little walk out to this on Saturday.Seems fine, area is clear, Path up to it is clear. The water was up a little more than usual and this particular station reported-confirmed that fact with accuracy when I checked the site. Still don't get why they would shut it down. The next one on rte. 206 is quite aways off.

I received a reply. Here it is.

Guy,

The Pump Branch gage was one of three gages that were installed as part of a special research project with the Pinelands Commission. The data collection of this project is nearing completion and the 3 gages will no longer be needed for the project. The other two gages were Albertson Brook near Hammonton and Morses Mill Stream near Port Republic. It looks like we have obtained enough funding to keep the Albertson Brook gage (with raingage) operating, but not the other two.

Good to know it served it's purpose. Seems a shame though, I would think it would be a usefull ongoing reporter. I know where the Albertson branch unit is and unless I am just plain Dumb about the locations and their impact, my money would be on keeping the Pump Branch unit operational. I just hope that what looks like a seriously expensive piece of equipment doesn't wind up on a scrap heap somewhere.
Guy, thank you for taking the time to inquire and respond. You continue to be one of the valuable resources that make this site worthwhile.

I am sure they will store that away, or they have another project that it is already destined for. Look for it at a stream near you....but not near you Largo :)
