Starting Saturday, area residents will again be able to cast their lines or otherwise enjoy Grenloch Lake, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend.
Officials with the New Jersey Department of Environment Protection (NJDEP) and other agencies on Thursday announced the lake will be re-opened to recreation then, following the roughly four-month cleanup of a diesel fuel spill.
About 26,000 gallons of diesel spilled into Grenloch and adjacent waterways Jan. 12, when a gasket to an underground New Jersey Transit fuel storage tank failed.
As of late March, about two dozen animals - among them birds, beavers and muskrats - had been reported killed by the spill.
In addition, 75 turtles were found dead, although officials were unsure at the time if the diesel was to blame.
