I am thinking about getting back into an old hobby, namely brain tanning deer hides to make buckskin with.
I initially want to acquire about eight hides.I'm willing to pay for good hides. What I mean by good hides is decent size deer of either sex(no fawns please) and hides that have been pulled or fisted off.Any hide that has been knifed off is useless or near useless to me because any weak spots in the hide will tear through during the stretching and staking process.I'm even willing to do the skinning if anyone with hides isn't sure what I'm talking about.Namely you make the initial incisions with a knife but then pull and shove the hide off with your fists and body weight. It's actually just about as quick and easy as knifing and leaves you with a good skin instead of trash and will leave the membrane on your meat so it doesn't spoil nearly as quickly in warm temperatures and will keep flies and hence maggots off the meat.Fall is around the corner and any hunters out there on site(I know a few) who want a few extra bucks and less wasted deer parts PM me on this site. Also I could use the sinews on the legs and backstrap too if you don't mind parting with them too:) The brains are always welcome also but a bit tricky to acquire cleanly and I can always by brains at the butcher shop(God knows I don't have enough of my own) :)

I have this image in my head......

My brother is a taxidermist, I'll pass your request on to him as most customers don't ask for the hides, just the heads. He is in upstate NY, so it might not be possible, but I'll ask.

thanks for the offer of the taxidermists but after they cut the cape out for the mount the hide isn't worth the bother to tan.they take a third of it just for the head and neck.thanks anyway,

Roadkills?

Over the last month or so I have seen a lot of roadkill deer on the side of the road. Are these suitable for your purpose?

We will see how this fall goes. I hope I can help you out. My hides go in the trash, it would be nice to see them put to use.

Thanks Chris, Brain tanning is a lot of work but i think it's much nicer then the chemical tan that I've seen a taxidermist friend of mine get back. The chem tan is nice but for clothing the brain tan can't be beat.I have tanned half a dozen skins and ruined one while smoking.it caught fire another i smeared mink oil on it to see how it would work.i waterproofed it alright but ruined it for clothes.lotta work to experiment like that.I figure seven hides will make me an outfit but I will take a few extra to cover mistakes.nice thing about tanning, most mistakes can be corrected.minus burning and mink oil that is:)

I tanned out a couple. I got the kit at Harry's up rt 130. If you want to be a purist you can play with brains and stuff. Might take a few beers, not for the hides :) .

Jeff, I'm pretty sure this is the guy who invented the tooth brush. Definately a graduate of Pemberton Twp. H.S.

Can't resist...it would be called a teeth brush if invented anywhere else.
One more...He sure does have a purty mouth.

Thanks and don't forget your waitresses and bartenders...
