All,

I had a busy day today in the pines and elsewhere, and I posted about my early morning adventure in a separate post. From there Jessica and I traveled through Lebanon and saw the hunters lining the road like lemmings waiting for the drivers to push the deer to them so they could shoot them along the road.

From there we traveled over to Reevestown Cemetery near Warren Grove and visited the grave of John Bowers. If you have a copy of the January 1974 National Geographic you can read about him in the excellent article on the people of the pine barrens written by John McPhee. Fred Brown who you may remember in John McPhee's book "The Pine Barrens", visited John Bowers grave often and poured whiskey on the grave because he was asked to by Mr. Bowers when his death did occur.

We then decided to head down to the Barnegat Lighthouse where we found it open and we climbed to the top.

From there we headed back toward home and for the second time noticed that there are many more water testing pipes that have very recently been added to various area's of the pines. The wood frames for the cement are still like new. Today we saw one in Labanon and one in the fenced in area of the chemical dump off of 72.

I went home for a few hours and my wife agreed to travel back to the pines with us and we visited Lovers Lane in Green Bank and saw over 25 deer lining the road. From there we went to Apple Pie Hill as the sun was setting in the clouds.

What a trash heap that place is anymore! Someone this time threw an air conditioner off the tower, along with two bicycles, and multiple other electronic equipment. There was even two dead deer right there on the top of the hill that some hunter had just left there.

Don't click on this link if you do not want to see them. My wife took this photo.

Nice report Guy.

I laughed when you said they were lined up waiting to shoot them along the road. Doesn't sound very sporting does it? Those deer in Green Bank lining the road, what was that all about?

Its a shame your wife went with you and saw the trash at Apple Pie Hill. Of all the impressions of the pines, that will probably stick in her head. I posted 3 years ago how development on the edge of the pines will bring in all sorts of riff-raff. True isn't it?

I was thinking. I really want to make some camping-hiking trips in the pines to wild areas before it gets so crowded on the outer ring that we can't go in the pines without running into people.

Sounds like an interesting day. Lemmings, indeed . . .

I think that point has been passed. Everytime i think I've reached a new depth into the wilderness--someone walks by me on the trail. Seems i have to drive myself into deeper thicker and more miserable portions of the bush to have a little time alone.

Bob,

I took my wife there when I was dating her, so she is no stranger to the place. Below is a photo of that visit. I learned later that in her pocketbook was a knife given to her by her dad in the event I did not act properly :)

Notice how short the trees are and you can easily see the road that leads to the JCRR. That road is no longer there at the tower area. It was eliminated when they put up the railings. Also, notice the area where one of the buildings for the Pine Crest sanitarium was located can easily be viewed. That is where I dug up syringes from that era which were just inches below the surface.

This photo is from around Jan/Feb 1980 or 1981. Most likely 1981.

The deer were just lining the road, and as we drove slowly down it they one by one entered the woods as we came upon each one. They stood at the edge of the woods as we drove up and down the road looking at them.
