to deer lawn ornaments. I spend a great deal of time driving though suburban medford/mt laurel etc for work. In the dying light these ornaments have me braking every mile or so. If we didn't have so many suburban deer hanging about it wouldn't be such a big deal....but we do.

So, I figured an easy fix was to memorize where these ornaments are. that worked out fine until I failed to brake at a house known for it's deer lawn ornaments and coincidentally REAL deer actually were getting ready to cross. I came to a screetching halt. It is just irresponsible. Might as well just put an ornament of a kid chasing a ball in your front yard.

Hey, you know a good place for deer lawn ornaments? The back yard. Or even better just watch the real deer eat your flowers. Rant for the day

I am seeing more deer than ever this summer, the difference really seems striking to me. There are a couple mothers and young fawns that graze in my yard. If you've read my posts before, you'll know I'm not a fan of deer. But these fawns are really cute, and it's interesting to watch the interaction with Mom. I can sit on the porch and they will take note of me but continue to graze unless I make a sudden movement. I don't care, I don't have a garden or landscaping.

But I've also had a couple close calls on the road. One was too close for comfort about two days ago...

I bagged one a couple years back with the Escape during the middle of the day on rt 530, not when I would expect to see them. She ran out between oncoming cars. Put an quick end to a weekend trip to PA, we were just 20 minutes away from home. The Escape was drivable but still was over $2500 in damage.

When we lived on 1134 Smithville in Springfield Twp, Burlco, in 27 years the tally was 2 Chevies and one Olds, all within a mile of the house. Begone, rodents of the forest!

That's what I find so striking this summer. I see them in the middle of the day all over the place around here. That seems unusual to me. My near miss was right around noon. Ran right in front of me on a little road. Fortunately I was doing less than 30 MPH and slammed on the brakes just in time.

I am just glad the deer are small down here. I was doing around 50; I did hit the brakes and swerved toward the shoulder, but the distance was so short it was of little help, hit on the front drivers side. Saw her as she came out from behind the car that was passing by. There is a small cemetery back off 530 from the direction they came, probably disturbed out of there.

Deer, and mostly smallish have been prevalent back my way a good bit this season. As well I have been riding up 542 to visit friends every weekend and they bounce around all over out there.
Last Saturday a few below Wading River Bridge and a batch right there at the last tight turn coming home by Crowley's coming home just at the edge of dusk. That was a bit spooky given the already sensitive nature of the bend.

Lots O' Turkeys too, seen a lot of young recently with their mums.

Last night near midnight coming up 679/563/72/4 Mile Road from mothing at Forsythe NWR we counted 13 deer on road edges, in ones and twos, including 2 bucks. Luckily none decided it needed to cross the road with zilch traffic. Going 30 to avoid sudden deer crossings was out of the question.....

Even though there was no traffic, you were unable to drive at a safe speed to avoid the deer, so you were just lucky that none of them crossed in front of you? Did I get that right?... ;)

So sorry to stray to turkeys again but last eve on Green street just off RT 9, I saw what had the be the biggest danged hen turkey in the entire of my life on a lot at the edge of the road just across from the fire company just gazing at the traffic. I truly thought it was some statue or something till I saw movement. Fascinating the lack of fear.

I've been wondering where all the turkeys have gone down here. I saw more than ever all winter and spring. But now they're all but gone. Have seen a few loners out in the woods, but none of the big flocks.

The turkeys are all on Haines' property along Tuckerton Road and 563. I have seen early in the morning.

There was a fawn on 295 today in Cherry Hill standing right at the edge of the hard road watching traffic go by. Some of the cars had stopped maybe to get out and try and force it away from the road. It was not moving at all when I lost sight of it.
