Kayakers Needed...To help clean up Cape May Harbor’s back bays, marshes and shorelines!
On August 15, 2012 starting at 1pm, Pittsburgh-based Paddle Without Pollution will be bringing its waterway clean up initiative to Cape May Harbor. According to founder, David Rohm, “We love Cape May so much that we had to bring the event down to Cape May as well.”
The Paddle Without Pollution organization will be bolstered by staff and volunteers from New Jersey Audubon’s Nature Center of Cape May, partner Aqua Trails Kayak Tours, and kayak enthusiasts from far and wide.
“Kayaks allow us to get into places that are difficult or impossible for motorized boats to reach. Participants are often able to grab litter and pollution that has been there for years. Much of this pollution does not biodegrade quickly and can be harmful to wildlife and sealife,” according to Rohm.

That's a worthy endeavor. Unfortunately they scheduled it during the week, when I'm at work.

There's a spot on the Wading River about 1/4 mile north of Evans Bridge that you can access from the road. I went back there a few days ago and noticed that there's a small clearing on the opposite side of the river that kayakers & canoers have trashed with beer cans, bottles, food wrappers, discarded/broken gear, clothing items, and a big red tarp that was hanging in a tree. That area was completely clean a month ago. Now it's a pig sty. Most kayakers, canoers and hikers are decent people who pack in and pack out, but I really wish the people who's main use of the pine barrens is as a place to get drunk, would drink at home and throw their garbage on their own property so the rest of us don't have to see it and clean up after them.
