Me and Sophie a.k.a "SophaRofus" hit the preserve yesterday.Her first official bushwack.She has been a trail dog up till now and never seemed to realize she could push through the wall of brush into a whole new off trail world. I broke her in easily since as you PBX folks found out manumuskin preserve for the most part is nice open woods.In a few spots the Black huckleberry bushed up a bit and then she got behind my feet and wisely let me break trail for her,other then that she was off like a shot.I did have to yell at her a couple times because she seems to think she's her own boss occasionally,much like kids.She loves the water as you can see but cannot swim a lick.Much like my best friend.She will go out over her head for maybe six feet then turns around and wildly thrashes with her front paws and lets her rear end sag and looks quite retarded.her sister on the other hand swims quite well though she has defects of her own,like over rowdiness.In any case your PBXers should recognize this pond only you were across on the other side.I am much closer to "Whipoorbill Can't Swim".We did a 4 mile route about half bushwack and half trail.

I'm afraid she's going to get lost.She just takes off and goes,a few times I had to holler for three minutes to get her back.Not as bad as the husky i used to have.I had to chase that dog for a half hour before.The husky would see the truck when we got back and take off running.Sophie at least gets right in the truck when we get back.she's bad for taking off when she first gets out and the first half hour or so she goes kinda wild.she;s eight months old,hopefully she'll chill out as she gets old like me.

Yes, Buddy still takes off at 11 years old. He is used to the whistle and comes 9 times out of 10. The other nite he took off when I went down to let him use the outdoor facilities. I called and whistled to no avail...so I shut him out for the nite. In the morning he was sitting outside under a bush. That'll teach him some.

Al, make sure you blow the whistle a few times when he can see you so he associates you with it. I found a bird dog whistle at Cabelas and use that.

Al, we used to have a black Lab/Shepherd mutt named "Sophie" also (my daughter named her). Not very smart, she was a wild one that got into a LOT of trouble during her 14 years, but she had a good heart and loved to romp in the woods. That was 10 years ago and I do miss having a dog - I envy you guys a bit... but not enough to take on the responsibility or expense at this time.

Boyd, I feel the same way as you but today, I might have changed my mind. I saw blue merle Australian Sheperd that got my attention. Right at this moment, I am going back and forth, trying to decide what to do. I have a list of breeders on my bulletin board staring at me. I will add, the companionship is what I miss the most. Dogs are the best.

I didn't want the responsibility either and don't have it most of the time.She's my wifes dog given to her by her daughters as a mothers day present.She feeds,waters and cleans up after the dog I'm just her play toy.She listens to mom but looks at me as another dog.We have wrestlin matches,tug of war and fetch games,I haven't gotten the idea I'm supposed to let go of the stick when I get back with it yet thoughAt 60 lbs she hurts us both regularly by stepping on our feet,falling over on our feet,pawing at sensitive areas when your not ready for her.
I'm not really one for all the crap that goes along with having a dog but 90% of the time I'm the only one that'll take her for a walk while momma provides the daily care stuff.A walk isn't a walk if it's on a leash.If the beast can't run free there is no point.It's a win win situation.Momma keeps her fed and i work it off her.If I walk four miles she runs fourteen.I was thinkin of strappin the gps to her collar and find out how fare she really goes per mile to mineShe's really a very good dog but momma had to clean up barf today because she got in the cats food again.It makes her barf or fart or get the runs and she won't stop it and she eats cat turds out of the litter (scooby snacks)I can't deal with that crap.I told my wife thats your deal there,I'd rather do without a dog then deal with that but she doesn't seem to mind.It's funny how a woman can have nightmares over a spider but they think it's no big deal when a baby smears crap from head to toe.I'll never understand it.
