For those that have been concerned, I have a PhD in historical archaeology and have worked as a professional archaeologist for nearly a decade, and was contracted to monitor the work being done at Hanover Furnace during the dam construction and lead remediation project. No damage has been done to the site during the construction, I assure you, and the state preservation office and pinelands commission have been notified of my findings. Conservation work will be done on the cogs and other artifacts uncovered (including hundreds of pottery sherds) and an appropriate repository will be found. Fort Dix does not take these types of artfacts, so my recommendation has been to send them to the Pemberton museum. However, there are some very costly curation concerns involved with wooden objects, so we shall see who is willing to take them. I would be happy to give anyone a tour of the site -- contact me via private message if you're interested.

Cheers, Ariadne
