I am planning a trip to the barrens in May and joined the forum as I find that these sites offer a lot of info that is only avaiable to locals. I was a little taken-a-back when I read the responses to Mudboys post till I rememered how ps't off we get when we see people in our Shingrock Wilderness off trail stomping on lichen, tearing up steam beds, littering, and generally destroying an area that we have tried to preserve our whole lives. So to start out on the right foot I will be in the area with a group of folks that are "locals" and I understand what little it takes to screw up an ecosystem and also understand that an influx of outsiders is not a good thing. I'll be riding a Ural motorcycle sidecar rig that is pretty environmentally friendly. I guess to start if anyone could offer some must see places, things to look out for,a good seafood market, general advice about the area it would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Brad

Brad,

My brothers name is Brad  Anyway, the barrens are quite large actually, so can you give us a general area where you will be. This will make it easer to narrow down where to give you info on.

I would recommend Batsto Village for a good start. You get to drive through some nice scenery to get there and it has some history to it. (Not just some stone or an overgrown depression in the ground to go look at - chuckle). They have some trails and the river, besides the museum. I hope that helps.

Yes, batso is a good place to start. You simply must paddle one or more of our rivers, mullica , batsto , wading, oswego, egg harbor, cedar creek, toms, to name a few. try to avoid the weekends if you can.

for a seafood shop, river road clam house in lower bank is quite in the heart of the pines. Allen's clam bar in new gretna is a great place to dine.

a beer on a sunny sunday afternoon at the green bank tavern is a piney experience like no other.

Buzby's general store in Chatsworth has some neat local odds and ends (books, music, jams and jelly). For a good pine barrens bar and grill try the Hedger House about 2-3 miles down from Buzby's. All the parks have good hiking trails if you're interested in that and someone else posted the rivers. Enjoy.

Brad, welcome aboard. This site has a ton of info, you could honestly read on for days and days. And if you need to know something, a lot of the users here are enthusiastic, and hold a database worth of piney info in their heads. lol. And what a cool motorcycle. I've checked them out a couple of times and man do they look nice. Their videos on their site are pretty crazy too! I frequent the pines on a cycle every now and then and it is a neat experience.
