I have gotten very fond of watching the NEXRAD radar from Ft Dix whenever a storm is coming, and often keep it open in a browser window as I work (I have a 2 monitor setup on my Mac). However I've noticed they've been having a lot of problems over the past few weeks and the radar is frequently down. Looks like it must be a major problem, today they are displaying the following message

Message Date: Jun 20 2007 14:54:13
KDIX WSR88D HAS SUFFERED A MAJOR HARDWARE FAILURE. A ROC TEAM WILL BE OUT NEXT WEEK TO REPAIR. THE RADAR WILL NOT BE RETURNED TO SERVICE UNTIL LATE NEXT WEEK AT THE EARLIEST. SENT 06/20/07 1500Z

You can access the Ft. Dix radar images here:

No big deal though, the Dover AFB NEXRAD station is a pretty good alternative and it seems to always be working...

Here's a map of all the other NEXRAD stations in the US:

It's probably a sign of continued neglect of the NWS by the federal government. It is a critcal system and all efforts, no matter the cost, should keep it functioning. The NOAA weather radio stations are also frequently off the air.
