They are great, I used to go there all the time when I lived Medford. Just drove past there a couple days ago and remembered how much I liked their hoagies. I have to say though, it would never occur to me to bring a laptop there. :)

Don't need a laptop. You can use an iPodTouch or even an iPhone and use Facetime. The connection on an iPhone with Facetime is poor.

Jessica and I will be using that I am sure. We stop in once in a while and buy things.

nixons has wifi now?.....Well, there goes the old general store charm.

Jeff, our society is dependant on technology. When my wife and I took our 30th anniversary cruise, I was amazed at the whining that there was no cell coverage out in the ocean. They acted like they had the DT's. I know many on this site carry a GPS and have used them to find some amazing things in the pines. They are great for that kind of exploring and I've enjoyed reading their trip reports. For certain reasons that will go unexplained here, I'm at a stage in life where I'm not "exploring", I just want to enjoy being in the woods. I guess I'm also too stubborn to buy one. :)

I like that - and you might be surprised that I'm not so different. But I always carry a GPS, not because I don't want to get lost, but because I enjoy the experience of "walking the map" that I made myself. But I have definitely made a shift from "exploring" and "documenting" to "experiencing" and "enjoying".

Meanwhile I have a closet full of very expensive still and video equipment that gathers more dust everyday, while I take snapshots with my phone. I really enjoy the trip reports and the great photos that others post here - they are often very inspiring. But I also wonder whether the same people just go out to wander with no particular goal and no camera sometimes. Maybe it's just my background in the arts, but if I bring a camera then I'm a "photographer", constantly thinking about getting good shots and it starts to feel like work. Perhaps I'm just getting old and jaded? :D

But I do have a couple continuing exploration/documentation projects that I'll spend some time on when (if?) the winter comes.

Whats WiFI?
is a popular technology that allows an electronic device to exchange data wirelessly (using radio waves) over a computer network, including high-speed Internet connections. The Wi-Fi Alliance defines Wi-Fi as any "wireless local area network (WLAN) products that are based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) 802.11 standards".[1] However, since most modern WLANs are based on these standards, the term "Wi-Fi" is used in general English as a synonym for "WLAN". A device that can use Wi-Fi (such as a personal computer, video game console, smartphone, tablet, or digital audio player) can connect to a network resource such as the Internet via a wireless network access point. Such an access point (or hotspot) has a range of about 20 meters (65 feet) indoors and a greater range outdoors. Hotspot coverage can comprise an area as small as a single room with walls that block radio waves or as large as many square miles — this is achieved by using multiple overlapping access points

I can appreciate this. I love taking photos in the pines, but when I'm out there with my camera it's more about the camera and less about the woods.

Well, there goes the old general store charm.

I think you're probably right. The general store used to be a focal point for community members to exchange news and just enjoy each other's company. Just look at the stories about Buzby's in McPhee. Now nobody's happy unless they can always connect with their friends in distant places. Part of a bigger trend to create your own personal reality and isolate yourself from your surroundings. Hard to pinpoint when this started, but I think 9/11 may have marked a turning point.

But such is our world today. That genie is never going back into the bottle....

Stores must make a profit today, and having general stores like the old days is just not profitable or possible.

I have to disagree with you here, Guy. Nixon's selling point is their simple, old fashioned, rural flavor. If I want WiFi (which I don't) I'll go to starbucks.

For some reason it's even worse here in Atlantic County. I was in the Acme in Vineland today and it was empty. Wanted some hamburger but every package had today's date for expiration. Many of the vegetables looked wilted. The Acme across from Hamilton Mall is not much better and they have closed a few other stores in the area already. Pretty soon Shoprite may be the only grocery store in the area.

And there are no "Mom and Pop" grocery stores in May's Landing (like Murphy's in Medford and Atco). Incollingo's in Egg Harbor City is the closest independent store. There's a great but very small place called Gregorio's on Rt 50that has a limited selection of groceries but you can't do your full shopping there. The new owners have extended the hours and also put in pizza ovens and a coffee shop... with WiFi.

Maybe in the future we'll order our groceries from Amazon on our iPhones and they'll also kill off the big box supermarkets? They are trying to move in that direction by offering same day delivery and pickup lockers so you don't have to worry about missing the UPS guy.
