MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. - Most of New Jersey will be under a fire weather watch on Wednesday.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory on Tuesday afternoon for 16 of the state's 21 counties.
It says dry conditions across the region, combined with low humidity, creates the potential for dangerous fires to develop during most of Wednesday. And if that happens, the flames could be rapidly spread by strong winds that could gust up to 25 mph.
The advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. for Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Salem, Somerset, Sussex and Warren.

Gusty winds, warm temperatures and low humidity forecast for today has lead the National Weather Service to issue a red flag warning for today for Atlantic, Burlington and Ocean counties
A red flag warning is issued when conditions could allow fast-moving brush and forest fires to develop quickly.

The warning states that “a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential.”
Forecasters are calling for a warm sunny day, with temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s inland. Winds will blow from the southwest at between 10 mph and 15 mph, with possible gusts to 25 mph, the weather service said.

I also noticed this on the NWS site, but don't understand the criteria for declaring a "fire weather watch". Today is windier than yesterday, the temperature is higher and it hasn't rained. So why isn't the watch continued? For that matter, we had an inch of rain here last week, so I wouldn't describe conditions as especially dry in general.

Thanks, I wondered if maybe humidity was the key. It sure looks like a fire would spread quickly out there today though... really windy around my place.

... Increased fire danger this afternoon... 03/29/12

High pressure building in from the north will usher in much dryer
air today. Relative humidity levels will drop to between 20 to 25
percent over most of the area... except 25 to 30 percent along the
coast this afternoon. In addition... northwest winds will average
15 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph at times. These conditions will
combine with very low fuel moisture to create an enhanced fire
threat.

Residents are urged to exercise caution handling any potential
ignition source... including machinery... cigarettes and matches.
Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses
and tree litter that ignites will have the potential to spread
quickly.
