Despite the best efforts of Gov. Byrne and others, it is still unfortunately true that New Jersey’s dramatic Revolutionary War history is too little known or celebrated. It is also true that the fighting here was intense and long-lasting, that more battles and skirmishes took place in New Jersey than in any other of the 13 colonies. The significant role that New Jersey played in the American Revolution was recognized nationally in 1933 with the establishment of Morristown National Historical Park as the first historical park in the national park system. New Jersey’s central place in the struggle for independence was once again recognized in 2006 when Congress and the president created the Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area, one of 49 heritage areas in the United States.(Written by Cate Litvack)
