Getting such a permit would probably take about 30 days, although in an emergency firefighters would be allowed to create the barriers without prior permission, Wittenberg said.

I see a lot more emergencies in the future if this comes to pass ;) Sometimes its better for some people not to think to much.

1000's of fire breaks? Anyone got an idea what effect that might have on wildlife? The Pinelands require fire to continue its historical processes. This sounds like "Smokey Bear Squared" to me. And we know what that misguided practice resulted in out west. And 30 day permit process is unacceptable red tape? What's the rush?

Seems to be some miscommunication between the posters here. I'm not sure what western fires have to do with firebreaks in New Jersey.
