The chemical irritant in poison ivy is present in every part of the plant. The leaves, the berries, the stem, the vine, the roots . . . everything. You can get it any time of year if you come in contact or breathe in too much. I'm actually immune, too . . . but if you're not immune and you do touch it accidentally, you can wash it off within 60 seconds and you won't react to it.

Just this past weekend, I picked up a case of poision ivy at the Belcoville site. I react very strongly to all poisions. When I get it, it becomes so bad I end up in an emergency room getting a shot of predisone in my bottom! Then on to a couple of weeks of oral medicine as well as creams. I have tried everything with little results, but this week I tried something different. Ammonia, straight on the site of the inflamation. It doesn't burn and takes the itching away. It dries it up pretty fast too, within a day or two. Take not: doctors proberly would not recommend this, and neither do I. If you try it, you are on your own. Always consult your doctor first.

We have a plant that grows around our house called jewelweed, or touch me not.
It is a natural antidote to poison ivy. If you're not near water but near that plant, you can use and won't get the poison ivy (at least from the people I've seen use it.)
Joe is very susceptible to it, has been on steroids from it so many times that he has been told no more steroids. So the jewelweed is a great thing for us. I boil the leaves and wind up with an orange colored water which I freeze in ice cube trays then put in a freezer bag in case I need it during the winter.
The hairy vines are just as poisonous, even if there are no leaves on it, and a dog that runs through it can also get the oils on you. Burning it is a real big problem.
I've never had it either, though I have touched it.
I have been told that everyone is allergic, but some of us are less allergic than others, that some of us take repeated high exposure before developing it, but there is no one that is totally immune. I know someone who pulled it out of her yard for years with bare hands with no reaction, then one day had a horrid reaction after handling it for years.
I'd like to believe otherwise. :(
