Their home is the Rancocas Nature Center, managed for 36 years by the nonprofit New Jersey Audubon to promote public access and showcase the birds, plants and animals of the creek. Tours, day camps and other environmental educational programs are held on- and off-site. The nonprofit leases the house, barn and 135 of the 1,252 acres from the state.
On Dec. 7, the Audubon organization stunned supporters and the state when it abruptly announced financial issues would cause it to shut down the operation this week.
But the nature center has won a three-month reprieve.
