Well, it has been a couple of chilly days!

Yesterday Kristen and I spent several hours outside at a raptor count offered by The Nature Conservancy. Our group saw 8 eagles all told, 6 of them feasting on a dead goose, and a kestrel as well.

Today I spent the entire day outside, from 8 a.m. to almost 5 p.m. at Russ Juelg's Basic Wilderness Survival course. We built a debris hut, learned how to make fire in snow, treated water by boiling, chemicals and filter, and covered the food aspect as well as land navigation.
I had a blast. The course runs again on Feb 21, Joe will be taking it then. It isn't terribly expensive--$35, a bit less if you are a PPA member. If anyone is interested you can find information on their website under Pineland adventures.

Sounds good. Today I took JoEl to a whole bunch of places. We first
stopped at the Cumberland Methodist cemetery. Then on to Port Norris,
Shellpile and Bivalve. Then we went to Thompson's Beach. We walked
all the way out there and spent quite a bit of time there and then
walked all the way back. My toes and fingers never really got that
cold. The cold doesn't really bother me if I'm dressed for it. The
cold will never stop me from exploring and going out.
Anyway after Thompson's Beach we took a gander at the Delmont school for a few minutes and then went up to Seabreeze, stopping on the way to look at the Texas Long-horned cattle and then at the 1680 church site and
1700s cemetery. Then I showed her Seabreeze. What a sight the
Delaware Bay is right now! I've never seen anything like it, with the
bay frozen like it is. It's not like a frozen pond or lake. The ice
is in pieces, ranging in size from tiny to maybe 4 foot across,
melted and re-frozen, twisted up, pushed up, re-broken and so on.
Some of the broken stuff was pushed up and piled up like 3 to 4 feet
higher than where the average level of the surface would be. It's
really cool to see. And of course the Ship John Shoal Lighthouse can
be seen, maybe a mile and a half to 2 miles out, and Delaware beyond
it. And off in the distance to our right we could see one of the
cooling towers of the Salem nuclear plant complex. That was way, way
further up the coast.
Anyway, after that we drove through Millville so we stopped in the
Mount Pleasant Cemetery and I showed JoEl the big bog iron
gravemarker that's there (Rev. Abijah Davis, 1817). Then we went up
to the Russian church and cemetery at New Kuban, in Buena Vista
Township, then I drove us past the Friendship Methodist Church (1808)
and cemetery, then we went to the Blue Hole and walked to it. Again,
it was not frozen, not at all. By then it was past 4:30 and I took
her home.
What a day. I loved every minute of it. I hope JoEl enjoyed it as
much as I did.
By the way, I think it was 14° when I left to pick her up this
morning, and when I got back here it was 20°. Now it's 19°. Pretty
cool.
