It is quite remarkable the number of solar panels that have been installed on telephone poles in Burlington county. As you drive around, it seems like there's a panel on literally every third or fourth pole. I think I posted an article here awhile ago that said NJ was the #2 state for solar power, and it achieved this with a distributed approach of putting panels on telephone poles and rooftops instead of building "solar farms".

Seems smart, but I wonder if it's creating a maintenance nightmare to have such a large quantity of panels? And they are pretty big - looks like they could be a problem in a big windstorms maybe?

I always thought those panels were providing power for something mounted on the pole, like the emergency phones on the interstates. You learn something new every day :)

Here's the old thread --> http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/newspaper-articles/6698-nj-2-solar-power.html

"We don't have the land to do big, grid-connected, utility-scale solar projects, so we've had to think more creatively," said Ralph Izzo, chief executive of Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. The big utility received regulatory approval this week to install 40 megawatts of solar panels on utility poles and another 40 megawatts at its industrial yards and on rooftops.
