does anyone know the story behind Russel's Crossing

its an offshoot from Carranza Road
was riding there the other day and saw this sign

Also headed north there is another offshoot that has barriers
it claims that cameras are in place?

looking at aerials the path does not show up?
whats back there?

Sorry, not familiar with Russel's Crossing and not sure where it is, can you post a link from my map? I updated it at the end of last year and tried to include all the roads from the legacy USGS 24k topo's plus newer roads from aerial and LIDAR imagery (shown in a purple-ish color).

If you can't find the road here and haven't seen it on aerials, it should show on LIDAR unless it's really new (I believe the imagery from this part of the pines was captured in 2019).

Or this is a more colorful version that also shows roads and other features. Either way, I'd expect any significant road or trail to be visible.

I used to drive that road all the time. They closed it I believe basically because they can and for no other reason,It"s not near the rattlers. It used to be part of my 50 mile dirt road drive.took four hours and nary a black top road was touched.

The story basically is the sign was placed there to remember Russel. That sign there now is a new one. I had a photo of the original and passed it along so that the person making the new sign could replicate it. His name is Louis Bergdoll. He made a few slight changes and put it up.

The original.
