As I have stated before, my father lived at Sandy Ridge when he was a small boy. He took me back there several times during my childhood. Once we explored an area a ways back behind where the houses once stood. It was a sandy area which he said once stood a sawmill. Dose anyone know anything about a sawmill in that area? I would like to go and explore the area, but am fearful these days exploring by myself. Thought maybe someone with knowledge of Sandy Ridge would go with me. In exchange afterwards we could tour Friendship where I could show some things.

It is most likely the sawmill in the below photo.

This sawmill is located across Carranza road and just off a dirt road from the ruins at Sandy Ridge in a clearing. It may have been sandy at the time because the sawing operations had been recently in operation, but now it is moss covered all around the area.

You can get close to it by car and easily walk the rest of the way, or posibly you may be able to get there in a vehicle. We walked.

BTW, this sawmill is located just outside of the property line of Evans and Wills who owned Frienship Bogs and much of the property north of that up to Apple Pie Hill.

Or if it was farther away it could be the sawmill near Carranza. There is a clearing there also, especially since it was burned recently by the forest service.

sawmill way behind Friendship?

During interviews yesterday, I was told that there was an old sawmill way behind Friendship. If one goes along the side of the woods behind where the schoolhouse once stood, there used to be a road. The road of course was one car wide and full of sugar sand. I know this road once existed, but can no longer can find it. The terrain has changed that much. Anyway, down this road and take a road off the right back in early 1960s this sawmill was there. I was told there were cement slabs with rope attached and even sawdust or particles of somekind were present. It was supose to be near a foot bridge with running water present. A very beautiful site.

That is interesting to know. Looking over aerial maps it is obvious where in a broad area that the sawmill would be. Narrowing the location down would be a little harder. Some explorations are in order at a future date.

Thank you for the info.
