A search was halted for the night Sunday for a boater missing at the mouth of the Wading River in Bass River Township.
New Jersey State Police said in a news release that troopers were called at about noon Sunday to assist with finding a boater who had gone overboard. The boater, James W. Ashley, 52, of Mays Landing, was fishing on a 20-foot 1991 Renken boat when he noticed his line had fallen overboard, police said. Ashley jumped in the water to retrieve the line, but because of a strong current, he was unable to swim back to the boat. He went under water, police said.
