It's funny, but that idea is something that friends of mine and I have been kicking around for fifteen years. I knew eventually technology would catch up and provide the small, powwerful servomotors and sensors to make it work. I'm not sure, really, whether it's a great idea, but it was an inevitable one.

It is not that new. A company called transperformance has been making it for at least 10 years as an aftermarket part for guitars. Jimmy Page has been trying to get Gibson to put it on their production models since he endorses it and uses it (for using alternate tunnings without switching guitars). Lately he has been employing it during a song, which is something previously impossible live.

I find it a bit funny that they mention it is good for beginning guitarists because Les Pauls (did you notice the price) are not generally beginning guitarist guitars. Not to mention, learning how to tune developes a sense of intonation in a guitarist. I play a few different les pauls (I play professionally) but I wouldn't get this because the modification isn't worth the expense to me. It is neat though.

Yeah, I think you need to learn how to tune by ear, and when it comes to ensembles or even individual recordings who knows what nuance of character would be lost if machines always made sure the instruments were in perfect tune. I don't switch tunings much, but I can see the advantage there.
