Is anybody familair with the the history/area around Sharp's Mountian? Who was Sharp?

Similarly, Jackson Mountain (and Road).

Who were these folks and from what time period did they leave their mark?

I've been curious about Sharps Mountain also, since it's very near my property. I hiked back there with my GPS once, but it appeared to be on private land where the roads were clearly marked "no trespassing," so I didn't go all the way.

But I'm guessing there's not much of a "mountain" there anyway...

There is also a Sharp's Run so I would assume it was a property owner named Sharp that these were named after.

Can you point me to that map?

Best I can tell, it's very close to the State Forest boundry and I was hoping because of it's elevation - it may provide a drier route/path from the "hook" part of Wharton (between Atsion & Jackson Rds) down to Old Jackson/Acto Rd (near the intersec with Atsion Rd). It is "behind" a private cranberry bog (going in from Atsion Rd/behind trailor park), but the area around there appears to be within Wharton.

maybe Teegate can chase it down
sharps mountian

when we go back on that side we enter on the dirt just before the bridge near the county line. it gets very wet back there in alot of places
i would like to go stomping from jackson rd to "west jersey cranberry meadow" sometime just to poke around the waterways. i would like to see the old nj map showing the possible location of the old mill/forge in that area

Sharp's Mt. is located at:

39°48.092
74°48.644

In the mid 50's the top of the mountain was half in Wharton and half not. That may have changed since then. In any event if you go there you can be on Wharton property. You can see that in the below top map(s).

The only map I could find it mentioned on is the George Cook 1887 Chatsworth Atlas. It is in Medford Township on the Shamong border. I have never been on the top of it but have been right near it while hiking with a man I work with. Many of you may remember that day as the hike from hell where my GPS failed me and we were 5 hours late getting home. Basically we got lost..there I said it!

If you are a VERY adventurous soul you may see a few Easter Eggs in these maps. It is a wild and interesting area that only the best of hikers should go, especially in the cedar swamps. Don't trust your GPS.

there's actually a geocache right on top of it http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=ad5c27ea-2802-4c7a-a600-8a889dd3f212

and when you're up there it's apparent that it's the highest point in the area. however, it's an incredible bitch to get to... i came into the area from a dirt road off of atsion that sort of circled around a trailer park before going into those woods, but once i got a little deeper it was scratch city with narrow trails that really did a number on my paint job. also, its annoying driving around back in there cause you'll go down a road and then find that it's blocked off with those 313 shooting preserve signs that were discussed in the thread about the west jersey cranberry meadow. it's a pretty neat area but i'm not sure it's worth the trouble of getting there...when i found the cache i was disappointed to see it was a pretty small one and very damp because it hadn't been visited in months.

also i just noticed if you look at the logs on that cache page somebody posted a topo map with an overlay of their gps track to and from the cache, so that should be helpful for anybody looking for a way in.
