GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — When Anthony Coppola Jr. walked into what is now Fred and Ethel’s Lantern Light Tavern in Historic Smithville in 1997, the once-successful business had quite literally decayed into an oversized birdhouse.
“I looked up and saw a flock of birds sitting in the rafters inside the building. They flew at us and out the door, and I just stood there shaking my head,” Coppola said. “I looked at my dad and told him he was crazy to think we could turn it around.”
