Yesterday I found this beauty in the middle of the road, about 18 inches. I wish I could have gotten better pictures but there were cars coming and we just made it. Am I really seeing diagonal stripes? What is it?

We are seeing lots of turtles too. Red belly, spotted and box.
Turkey Beard is blooming, but not as prelific as last year.

that is an eastern (chain) kingsnake Lampropeltis getula unless they've changed the name lately? Wow! I do speak Latin! at least in snake anyway! They are beautiful snakes of which i own a subspecies the california kingsnake lampropeltis getula californae.Mine has much more white in it.They are swamp snakes and usually not found far from water.they eat mostly other reptiles, lizards an other snakes. They can kill and eat rattlers with seeming immunity to their hemotoxic venom.
