A very quick ID, I thought this was a Northern Pine Snake. Walking down a "hilly" road today, I topped a little rise and was startled by a very loud hissing about 2 feet from my right foot. I stumbled back, landed on my gluteus, feet straight up in the air, and saw this guy was warning me off. At first glance I thought he was a Timber Rattler, but I saw no rattle and his head looked too narrow to me.

Classic defensive posture for a Pine! They can be intimidating and make quite a fuss when unhappy.

BTW- beautiful markings on the snake you photographed!
