STONE HARBOR — The borough on Saturday celebrated more than $1 million in improvements made to habitat and public access at its bird sanctuary.
The six-block-long sanctuary at 111th Street has 22 acres of the same type of wetlands and maritime forest that once covered most New Jersey’s barrier islands.
Little of this mature seaside forest is left in the Mid-Atlantic, let alone New Jersey, said Eric Schrading, assistant supervisor with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
