"Consumer protection investigators found mislabeled product dates and spoiled products waiting to be placed on display, officials said. The investigation then expanded to all five Stop & Shop stores in Ocean County, authorities said, where they found 'systemic mislabeling practices'."

I saw that article. I managed a fast food restaurant for a year after college and one of my duties was to teach food safety to the employees. Serving meat past its expiration date is no joke. The bacteria and mold growing on that meat can seriously sicken people and even kill a person who is elderly or weak.

I can guarantee you that Stop & Shop isn’t the only grocery store updating the expiration dates on their products. Have you ever purchased meat or seafood from a grocery store and taken it home, opened it and was immediately greeted with a foul odor? Then you looked at the expiration date and thought, “Why does this smell rotten? The expiration date isn’t for another 3-4-5 days?”

One of the things I learned while working in the food industry is that there are some corrupt Health Inspectors who will overlook food safety violations if you grease their palm. It’s been 40 years since I worked in food service, but I can still spot health safety violations when I walk into a grocery store or a restaurant. I can’t help but ponder if they’re paying the health inspector to look the other way.
