The Amphibian Migration

Its that time again!! Peepers are out and NJ is FINALLY coming to life . . . which means the breeding migration is just about to happen. Tonight should be the night throughout the state--if it already hasn't happened. If its raining where you live and you know of a good vernal pool . . . make a point to head out tonight! I'm going up north again for what should (hopefully) be an impressive display of salamander migration. I'll post pics tomorrow. Good luck!

Found this amorous pair of garters near my home in Bucks Co. Pa this afternoon.

So here's what i got:

Plenty of peepers:

Wood Frogs

American Toads

LOTS of spotted salamanders (which i love)

Two four-toed salamanders . . . not too easy to find . . .

and a few pickerel frogs--including this excellently colored specimen:

We also headed to the Great Swamp NWR later on for possible blue-spotted salamander crossing, but we apparantly had already missed it. Either way--still a great night. I love spring.

I've really been trying to improve the quality of the photos I take . . . only problem is that since now i'm able to take much better pictures, it makes all my old ones look horrible by comparison. Now I have the task of re-photographing everything I've ever seen . . .which i guess isn't that terrible of a task to have put in front of me. I just hope this is a good herping year. 2005 was my worst year ever.
