After months of recuperating from life-threatening wounds, 27 Washington Township residents finally returned home on Thursday.
Resident turtles, that is.
The reptiles, who were released back into Grenloch Lake Thursday afternoon, had been rehabilitating at Tri-State Bird and Wildlife Rescue in Delaware after a Jan. 12 oil spill into the lake and surrounding waterways left them in need of intensive care.
For months, volunteers at Tri-State painstakingly administered antibiotics, cleaned wounds and monitored more than 30 turtles they rescued from the lake.
“We’re very excited for these guys,” said Tri-State’s Sarah Tegtmeier, who has been working with the township to ensure the safety of the animals affected by the spill.
