USGS Pond Numbers

I've noticed that some ponds and lakes on the USGS quads have numbers on them. While I was at the Franklin Map store, I asked Mr Internet what these numbers were and he said they were depths but, when we looked at a map, the numbers were too large to be depths. He then took out the USGS key but there was no explaination for them.
I thought they may represent names on a list somewhere but I now doubt that.
Any answers to this little puzzle?

you might be refering to the water elevation on the topos, not all have them and I have found many incorrect at times too.

Thanks Piney,

I thought maybe there was a list of names for these ponds. The elevations makes perfect sense. If you look at the first pond you come to after leaving Atsion on the Quaker Rd it has a 32 and the pond upstream has a 33. I think we have good flow!
