Hello,
I am new to this forum and site but have been going back into the pines all my life.

I am now again an avid hiker and well just love to discover things piney!
I have had very bad back problems for years now. It has kept me from the pines. I have switched doctors and have gotten a lot of help getting my back in order again. Man the difference a different doctor can make!!!

Well Hope to meet some of yah on the trail. or where ever .

Once again thank you for having this forum. Looks like you guys have worked hard on it. Great amount of good info!

Hello everyone, I'm in Pa now and was feeling a little homesick when I came upon this forum. While I was viewing the photos I realized that I have several that my grandfather took many years ago. I'll try to get to them. I was raised in Mercer County and I guess I was just thinking about the rides to the shore on the 'ol days. great job admin. I'l be back.

My photos are in a upstate Pa at this time . I will try to collect them in the coming week. My grandfather was a photographer and collector. In the short span of 25 years, 30 or so after my grandfathers death, my brother cleaned out his attic. That took a year. The items were categorized. Many photos, lots and lots of books ,guns,uniforms...many from the Revolution. I've sent an email and am hoping that the items didn't go the way of ebay. Hope to have good news soon.

I did not forget. My kids are now in college so I have moved on to elder care. My vacation involved the relocation of my mother from Wellsboro,PA. to the WG area. Stressed but not down and out. I will get to the pics yet!

A beautiful good morning to all. It certainly is a blue,blue sky we have this morning. I see that it has been a little over 7 years since I last stopped in. Attribute this to life and death. The sudden passing of my 20 year old son due to cardiac dysrhythmia and shortly after, the death of my mother. Needless to say I dropped out of life for a spell and am now emerging again, however different knowing they both live on a new spiritual level of energy.
I have a question concerning hiking and safety in the Pines. Aside form the common sense precautions, how safe is it to hike alone? While living in Roanoke, Va. And venturing out on the Application Trail, just for a look see, a warning sounded in the back of my mind telling me that I was Really pretty much alone out there. So, I stayed closed to home. But as far as the Pines, what would you do or stay close to in order to have a safe hike?
I am in no way a Trail Hiker so my experience is limited. Thanks

Sorry to hear about your losses.

As for hiking alone I have some thoughts on that. I am a firm believer that if you stay away from the usual locations that people tend to frequent you are the safest. Jessica and I do that most of the time and we rarely run into people. The odds that the individuals you do run into are planning anything nefarious is remote. Those that tent to want to do that will frequent those places where they feel someone will be at to seek out. Basically, you don't go looking for woman alone where you never see them. And woman alone where people don't frequent are the safest in my mind. In the woods I believe this to be true.

With that said, you may be best to drive to a location, park your car, and wander the roads or woods close by it. There are plenty of places that are very interesting that you can get a vehicle to easily. Or find a place that has recently been burned by a fire and walk through it. Or look for any clear open woods and find a trail leading into it and take it. Nobody is going to be there to bother you except for the short distance you get out of your vehicle and return to it. Most times Jessica and I park my car a distance from the trail we want to go down, then get out of the car and make a quick dash along the very edge of the road to the trail and get in the woods as soon as possible. Nobody sees us go in which results in nobody bothering us. On the way out we check the road before entering it and make a quick exit to the car and we are off to our next location. I guess you can tell for the most part we are antisocial.

Anyway, if you want suggestions I will give you a few and I am sure others will also.

The single most important thing to do is always tell someone where you will be. Manumuskin, Bobpbx, and myself have a system where we email before we do anything while alone. Manumuskin and Bob routinely send me maps showing where they are going or generally going and tell me the time they expect to be back. Many times I have called Bob checking on him to see if he was out of the woods when the time seemed to me to be getting past due. Often he is just running late because of a great day in the woods. And I keep in touch with Jessica by text on Sunday mornings when I go out, and as I move from one location to another I let her know.

Jerseygirl, Guy's advice is spot on.

I want to throw in a great place to hike for people that want a marked trail, solitude, and safety. The Franklin Parker Preserve in Chatsworth has several wilderness trails. And here is the real good part about it: unless you are doing scientific study, you cannot drive on the preserve, and the gates are all locked. That means you have huge open spaces all to yourself, and the chances of running into strange people are very minimal.
