I was in the woods today in Ridge, and while walking along side of the road something caught my eye. At first I thought it was a bee, but a closer look reveals it might be something else. A cross between a bee, a fly, and a beetle. What is it?

I was thinking it might be a robber fly. They are large (this bug was 1.5-2 inches long) and look like bees. They also attack bees.
This is the most similar photo I could find and it's a robber fly.

A bumble bee. The bug I found didn't have stripes and was all yellow.

I say it's a bee.

Guy

Yeah I guess I'll go with that. Unusual place for a bee though, right on the curb on the road. Maybe it was in that position due to the cold weather.
I would love to get some photos of turtles though, am I more likely to see them in low lying wetland areas or the upland dry pine forest?
There is also some eastern tiger salamanders living in the pines. I'd just like to get a photo of something, well, more rare than an unusual looking bee.:D
