Where Else to Off-Road in NJ ?

In the context of this message, I define off-roading as riding on a non-paved road, whether it be dirt/gravel/sand/mud/etc. That being said, what are some good legal spots in Southern NJ to wheel with a 4x4 truck? In case I forgot to mention it, I'm referring to spots not within Wharton or the Pines.

Many years ago, a favorite spot of my father was in National Park. Not in the monument area, but the area that goes down the ramp along the waterfront. Years ago, you could do a bunch of off-roading/wheeling down there. For anyone that remembers, you know what I mean.

That's the type of area I'm looking for with my question.

First what do you drive?

Anyway. There is miles and miles and miles of trails in the Pines. You can pretty much go down any paved road in Wharton and see a trail to drive off in to. Some of those smaller trails are technicly illeagle though.

For the most part you can check out any of the 119 Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in the state. Most of them (at least the ones I've been to) have a fairly extensive network of roads so that hunters/anglers can access many different areas. Be advised though that you may come across very tight trails that are just two tire tracks wide complete with "custom pinstripers" on either side. These trails may or may not be legal to travel by vehicle. That being said, if its not hunting season (and even if it is) conservation officers tend to be few and far between. In any case, tread lightly and no one will give you a problem.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a Ranger XLT 4x4 Off-Road and yes, I've already had my share of "pinstripes" down both sides. I purposely purchased this truck used (it's a 2001) because of that. I couldn't bring myself to buying something brand new and scratching it up like that. Even now, when I hear that low-hanging tree branch run down the side, I cringe.
