The pioneering aviator from Mexico crashed in the Pine Barrens in 1928 while returning to his homeland just one month after completing the third-longest solo flight at the time — a goodwill journey from Mexico City to New York City.
Members of the American Legion Mount Holly Post 11 attempted to mount a rescue that stormy July night, but only found Carranza’s body.
Eighty-three years later, the post continues an annual tradition memorializing the man who is a national hero in his home country.
It’s a way, they say, to continue fostering a spirit of goodwill between the United States and Mexico.
This year was no different as more than a hundred people gathered at the memorial erected in Carranza’s memory.

While this ceremony did attract new mourners, many of those in attendance come back every year.

During the 2002 celebration at the memorial, they had a bunch of newspaper articles hanging up to read. I photographed them but the macro on my camera back then did not work.
