What was there?

The other day right after the heavy rain, I decided to take a ride down that tar road next to Belhaven Camp Ground. I went a ways when I came to a beautiful area with large pines and cedars on both sides of the road. There was a foundation on the left. It looked like there had been very old houses possibly on both sides of the road at one time. There were a few old signs reading private property high up in a few trees. Then the road turned to dirt. I was afraid to go any further. Does anyone have any idea what may have been back there at one time? I have never heard anyone talk about the area before.

I have been there. That is private property and I believe it is owned by Belhaven. If you had continued on you would have come to Bulltown Bogs. These maps show the spot.

This shows the dwelling on the left side of the road shown as a black dot, and there are three white squares on the right side of the road. The state owns the property above, to the right, and below, and Belhaven owns to the left. You are for sure on private property when at the ruins.

In the 90's that Bellhaven family was a good customer of mine and when the movie company for the Denzel Washinton movie "FALLEN" filmed out there I was the supplier of most of the electrical for the set. I believe the area you speak of was part of it. The movie was dark spirited but if anyone saw it, it really did depict the region in an air of mystery, ghostlyness & such. Pretty cool stuff.
The Barrens on the big screen.
