Jeff, I've tryed to stay out of this but I'm starting to wonder about you. With all the various issues affecting the pine barrens, you seem very fixated on logging. Do you have some vested interest in it? I doubt anyone thinks logging, and its resulting products, aren't necessary. Common sense...

    Snake Crossing Road

It isn't easy trying to find a fair middle ground on recreational uses of the woods, but ATVs seem to be a little off center to many. You can claim that it is the driver, not the machine that is responsible for any misuse, but they are just like Jet Skis, not much fun unless you riding them in a...

    Stick shelters

Pinelands is in Little Egg Harbor, and serves the municipalities of Little Egg, Tuckerton, Eagleswood, and maybe New Gretna.

By the way Jeff, you're right about arguments. They do make life more interesting!

    Snake Crossing Road

Guy, I don't remember the specific details or date, but it happened about a month ago at the informal swimming area within Penn State Forest. Technically that area is not a bonifide swimming beach, but the state seems to look the other way. Anyway, a man was swimming or playing with his dog, and...

    Snake Crossing Road

Sorry Jeff, but I also have to take issue with you on this one. For the sake of the argument, you can toss out the fact that all snakes are legally protected in New Jersey, not to mention that Timber Rattlers are one of the two snake species here classified as endangered. It simply makes no...

    Stick shelters

I think he's just not teaching that particular class anymore, and the present teacher doesn't have the interest or background to go that far into it. I am only familiar with it because myself or other staff members from our park have always assisted him with his field trips.

    Stick shelters

If the shelters you describe are along the Batona Trail, just before you get to the fire tower, they are debris huts, similar to the ones Tom Brown teaches his students to build. These where built by students from Pinelands Regional High School, as part of one of their science classes held every...

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME....................

I agree. I am thankful to Brendan Byrne for his efforts to create the Reserve and protect the Pine Barrens, but this tract was named for a historic village that once existed there, not some arbitrarily assigned name that had no signifigance. Oh well, I guess the old guy earned it!

    I found it!

The first time I was there was on a college field trip in the late 70s, and the old wooden boardwalk was there then. How long it existed before that, I cannot say. About a half dozen or so years back, the decaying wooden boardwalk was replaced with the current one made of metal and a recycled...

    I found it!

We are quickly getting past the best time to see the several species of orchids that grow there, but the bog is always worth a stop if you are in the area. Be sure to look for the curly grass fern if you go again though. If you walk the boardwalk in a clockwise direction, you can spot a nice...

    Pine Barren Sandwort (in bloom)

Yep, Jeff, there are cacti in NJ. The prickly pear is the only one that is native east of the Misssissippi River though. It's well adapted to the pine barrens' sandy environment, and since it can also tolerate salt spray, it's found on our barrier islands as well. The yucca is not native...

    Homemade Bug Spray Really Works

Webbs Mill Bog sure is a great place. I've heard the P.B. tree frog there too, but I associate that spot more with the plants found there than the animals. Now is a good time to see a number of orchids blooming as well as the ever-present sundews, pitcher plants, and curly grass fern. The new...

    Pine Barren Sandwort (in bloom)

I've always found cemeteries great places to look for plants. The Reevestown cemetery just north of Warren grove is one of my favorites in early spring. There is more pixie and trailing arbutus than there is grass!
