South Toms River teen’s drowning in Berkeley mining pit deemed accidental, authorities say

That is correct. Al came on board about the same time as the new Ocean County prosecutor (Joe Coronato). Al's been great since starting with Ocean County. All of us in the local media have been quite appreciative of his efforts!

'Recovery' of Sand Roads After Sandy/Nor'Easter

Well, answered my own question today. Took a ride in the Aserdaten area, down Jones and out to the preserve. Enjoyed a very nice day out there and introduced a girl I've been seeing (and her dog) to the area. Good times all around, and everything looks to be in good shape. Lots of people out...

    Sandy aftermath

Oh man. 7 inches of salt water in my house in Surf City. No water in my parents' house in Brick (amazingly!) but no power for 11 days. House, flood and FEMA insurance guys coming tomorrow. So much for those nice hardwood floors and the new linoleum in the kitchen put in a few months ago. Ugh...

'Recovery' of Sand Roads After Sandy/Nor'Easter

Thanks guys. Got 4WD but don't want to tear things up. Will explore at my own risk. Snow is mostly melted but looking forward to getting some good shots this winter. ;)

'Recovery' of Sand Roads After Sandy/Nor'Easter

Being new to this, I'm not too familiar with how the roads of the pines tend to recover after storms - mainly the timeline and the procedure. I can only imagine there is a lot of water in certain areas, plus trees down. I'd love to go out tomorrow and take some photos of the snow out there...

    Outages Have Started

Looks like Deja Vu all over again. If there were any more transformers left in this neighborhood, they just blew. And to think, a day after power returned. Ugh.

    Outages Have Started

About 1,000 out in Brick, last I checked. But that's to be expected. Town with most frontage on Barnegat Bay + tons of trees close to the shore = disaster in a hurricane. In my usual hometown of Surf City, who knows. I shut off the main before I left the island.

Sussex County prepares for 'catastrophic' storm

Yeah, I was going to leave her in, but since I am literally writing articles being read by hundreds of thousands of people about how bad the storm is going to be, I figure I should listen to what I'm telling everyone else. I grew up next door to a guy who had been through the '44 storm AND the...

Sussex County prepares for 'catastrophic' storm

Ha, so I decided to pull my boat out of the water today, and I ended up hiring someone to do it since I've never hauled it with my new SUV and I didn't want to "experiment" with a 20-deep line at the boat ramp. The guy I hired shows up having just come back from delivering a snowbird's boat to...

    The Name 'Cedar Bridge'

The dovetailing of my "first pine barrens trip" thread into a discussion on the Cedar Bridge Fire Tower had me thinking of the name "Cedar Bridge" in the first place. Though it may seem obvious, does anyone know the specific origins of this name? Obviously, it would refer to a "cedar bridge,"...

Question on "Clearings" in the Pines

    Wow, thanks! All very cool.

Question on "Clearings" in the Pines

Since I began charting my list of sites I'd like to see now that I'm starting to explore the pines a bit, I've spent a lot of time going through both the topo as well as aerial maps to nose around and seek out things that look interesting. The other day after my trip to Black's Bridge, I...

Exploring Jones Road and Black's Bridge

Thanks! Yeah, it was a cool experience in that area. I liked it a lot. I didn't want to do much hiking around since I had shorts on. When do the bugs usually calm down/die out for the season?

Exploring Jones Road and Black's Bridge

I found myself on Route 539 today and had an hour or so to spare, so decided to check out an area I've been meaning to get to since my maiden pine barrens trip to the Forked River Mountains a few weeks ago. Specifically, I wanted to check out the northern part of Jones Road out to Black's...

    Visiting old haunts with Pan

What a great day! You guys hit almost all of the spots I have on my list for the next couple months (I'm just getting started in my explorations). The visibility in the fall is amazing (well familiar with this from boating) and that view of Philadelphia with a point-and-shoot is awesome...
