    Forest Fire at Atsion

90% of all our fires in NJ started by humans, whether by accident or intentional. I hope this is accidental.

I can see a large column of smoke while I'm driving home from work. My wife is telling me there is a fire off 206 near Atsion.

    Definition of a Piney

I'm just looking for everyone's opinion on what they think is a "piney". I've seen on other posts mention of the definition of a piney from where you were born to what you call home. Growing up I was taught that being called one was derogatory. Today I have friends and coworkers from more urban...

An Interesting Pines Post From an Unlikely Website

A friend sent me that last night. I thought it was an interesting add campaign and what other regions he went to. Now I know

    Prescribed burns

JD, I wasn't attacking you personally. The notion that anything can be done to the pines and it will grow back just gets to me whether it's someone from the FFS or not. New roads not only make easier access to remote locations for the FFS but everyone else as well. We have seen this happen in...

    Prescribed burns

JD, Please explain to me why you feel I can't be a member of the FFS and care about the environment. Is that not possible? As I have said before I have been active in the FFS from the early 90's to about 6 years ago and have been deployed out west as a member of the FFS many times over that...

    Prescribed burns

The idea that we can do anything to these woods and they will bounce back is what I have a problem with. I agree prescribed burns and breaks are needed to maintain a healthy forest. But to say that it will grow back better and the brush piles promote homes for all kinds of critters is like...

    Requesting Help Re: Amphibians

In the retention pond behind my house the last few weeks all I could hear was chorus frogs until last night I heard the first spring peepers. Then I usually get the gray tree frogs and pine barrens tree frogs closer to May.

    Prescribed burns

I can point out roads that were made 20 years ago that are still very much here today.

    Prescribed burns

I m not familiar with the area but just looking at the map it looks to me like they are trying to put a break to stop a fire from going into the cedar swamp. Not sure why it needs to be a road but if you contact the section warden he should be able to give you a better explanation. Did they do a...

Another Boat Dumped in the Woods

The boat is still out there. I just saw it. I assume the owner has to remove it and just hasn't done it yet.

    Turning cranberry bogs into developments

Good point. I guess a cranberry bog would absorb all of that. But a highland crop or an orchard might be a better choice. Runoff would be less of an impact.

    Turning cranberry bogs into developments

I can't help but think. If you built a few condos around a cranberry bog or any type of crop for that matter. How would it be zoned? It is an active farm. It could save a lot on taxes and instead of having community land that you have to pay association fees for it's up keep instead would be an...

    Fire breaks

I agree. A lot of people feel that they can do anything to the pines and it will just bounce back. There are plenty of other fires that I was on where a new road was made but they never turned into anything like 1/4 mile. I have learned a lot just by cruising around this forum and listening...

    Fire breaks

Ok, I feel like I have to chime in. First let me give you a quick review on my background. I was a very active member of the FFS for over 15 years until family and work commitments forced me to step back. I have fought fires not only in the pine barrens but in many other states as well. In...
