1939 WPA Map of New Jersey

Learning a lot, this was very near my home, was it on the old Belco site? There's more, but I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader. :D [edit 8/25/23]The site was actually at Thompsontown on the East side of the river. See this thread for more info. From "Tour 24", page 607: "MAYS...

1939 WPA Map of New Jersey

You can also read it for free here (link is also in the Map Info). It's is a PDF of the 1986 reprint from Rutgers, quite a lengthy tome (767 pages). Still copyrighted, so I won't post anything extensive. https://rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu/rutgers-lib/1743/PDF/1/play/ See "Tour 23A" that...

    Wind Advisory

It (barely) missed me too. I went out for a twilight walk and watched the storm approach from the woods. As the sky got darker, thunder started booming and lightning began to flash, I headed back inside!

1939 WPA Map of New Jersey

Thanks! :) Apparently this became Egg Harbor City Lake, lines up pretty well with the parcels. https://boydsmaps.com/pines/#14/39.559182/-74.608336/parcels07/0/0/ Gloucester Lake is also interesting, it appears on the 19th century topos...

1939 WPA Map of New Jersey

Thanks Bob! I found this site while looking for info on the writers project, maybe you are already familiar with it but it was new to me. Did not spend much time, but saw a few interesting photos in the archives. https://wwwnet-dos.state.nj.us/DOS_ArchivesDBPortal/WPAPhotographs.aspx

1939 WPA Map of New Jersey

Note: as posted below, unfortunately this map is no longer available because a copyright is still in effect. All links to this map will no longer work. Sorry... As promised in another thread, the 1939 WPA Federal Writer's Project Map of New Jersey is now online! This map is much more accurate...

    interesting old book i found.

I knew about Millville, it's on the Cook, Vermeule and USGS topo maps. But Randolph and Union are new ones for me - thanks! This discussion has inspired me to scan another unusual vintage map I've had for some time. It's just a road map, not likely to help discovering any secrets in the Pines...

Here's something interesting on the Kobbe map. What are these labels "Randolph" and "Union" ? Not sure if they are two separate features or one -"Randolph Union"? They seem to be in the style of other township names.

    interesting old book i found.

Well, "opera" is a pretty general term. I enjoy some operas and others.... not so much. I knew virtually nothing about opera when I took a job as designer/technical director for Syracuse Opera in 1980. But I learned quickly. I left the field over 10 years ago, having climbed as high as I wanted...

    interesting old book i found.

Wow - as someone who spent the bulk of his career working in opera, I have seen his other book but never realized it was the same person who wrote this little guide to the Pines.

Introducing Boyds Map of the Pines XT

Just made a fundamental change to the site code that should make it use less memory and perform better. Theoretically, it should reduce the memory used by the data maps by a factor of 4, which should make them update faster as you move the map. Have only tested briefly, but it seems to be...

    interesting old book i found.

The color printing explains an oddity I noticed, portions of the barrier islands aren't shown in the black and white version, just the railroads. But your color version shows the outlines of the islands, so evidently the contrast was too low to be picked up when they screened the map for black...

That kind of printing must have been expensive in 1889. Did they also publish a black and white version "for the masses"? Or is it just that my 1977 reprint was black and white? Bob - are the maps in your copy printed in color?

    interesting old book i found.

Wow, the originals are in color - very pretty! It looks like the maps are just folded and inserted into the book. Are they? In the re-print, each half of the map is on a separate page with a gap between. How big are the maps? In the reprint that I have, they are about 9 inches wide x 6-5/8...

    interesting old book i found.

Kobbe's 1889 Map of the Pines is now available, finished it up in one day. These are very low resolution, inaccurate maps that aren't likely to help you find any property stones, but they're still interesting. I georeferenced them against USGS 250k topo's and there was only so much I...

    interesting old book i found.

All scanned, total of 12 10 images (6 5 maps that each originally spanned two pages). Didn't need to cut anything, the binding was quite brittle and it wasn't very hard to crack it open for each map and remove the whole page. Not sure how well these will fit together, if the scales are the same...
