    Movin' on out

I never thought I’d feel this way, but I’m starting to question the prospect and wisdom of remaining in New Jersey after I retire. In seven years I will be burning my mortgage and may be able to retire a few years before that. One can sell a paid-for house in New Jersey and buy a similar home...

Fishing is one of the most regulated businesses around

I’m frustrated by this trend as well. I can deal with regulations based on good research and sound management, although that in itself is often a subject of hot debate. But the increasing fees associated with fishing and hunting have removed an important and traditional component of those...

Are there any known caves in the Pines?

Another cave story has been passed down about Mordecai Andrews who supposedly carved a cave out of a gravel bank in Tuckerton for shelter for his family while he built his house. As you enter the Tuckerton Seaport you can see a gravel bank on your right that once bordered a road called “Quarry...

Shamong winery taps solar power for energy

I’ve had more than a few occasions to be quoted by the press at my job. Being misquoted is quite commonplace. The worst part is that the misquotes often make me look like a fool. Well, … a bigger fool than I am.

I would go with your guess regarding it being related to construction of the Parkway, or else the result of dumping of spoils from a nearby dredging project. I can’t imagine why Fish & Game would have done it. Waterfowl hunting is the most popular activity in this area and something like this...

Now I don't feel bad thinking I'm the only one that's run into a wall after waking up.

    Tucker's Isle

The photo depicting the lighthouse tumbling in the water is of the second lighthouse which replaced an earlier one. The base of the earlier light can be seen in some photos and was used to store oil for the newer light. There was also a US Lifesaving station on the island which was replaced by...

    Tucker's Isle

An island has formed in the general vicinity, but the consensus is that it is being called Tuckers Island out of nostalgia more than anything else. I land my boat there now and then in the summer with my kids. The mud flats on the east side of the island are a good area to dig piss clams.

    Are windmills the answer?

I went back and read that three times and laughed harder each time.

    Forked River Mountain Cleanup

I see my old red pickup in that shot! I haven't seen it since I traded it in last year.
