    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

Oh my. I've had that happen before. Suddenly, our legs were...moving. It's amazing how many larvae can stick to you as you're walking through the weeds. Your ID is accurate. SIx legs, round body shape, long mouthparts, festoons around the caudal aspect (The curly, fancy design around the back...

Tick Ecology in NJ Pine Barrens?

They will come back in huge numbers in the fall when it cools down. It's normal for populations to die down in the heat of the summer. The larvae and nymphs will be out and looking for hosts pretty soon. I wouldn't stop the preventative yet. I have researchers collect black-legged ticks in New...

Tick Ecology in NJ Pine Barrens?

For what it's worth, I am not a huge fan of Advantix, either. Also available are Seresto collars, which I use on my cats. It's a fabulous product. If you are squeamish about giving oral or topical spot on products to your dogs, this is a really good alternative, you can just take the collar off...

Tick Ecology in NJ Pine Barrens?

If I had a dollar for every person to ask me that question, I'd be retired by now. I wish!

Tick Ecology in NJ Pine Barrens?

For what it's worth, there are three new products out for dogs, they are all oral tablets (or treats) that control both fleas and ticks for a month or more. Especially black-legged ticks, which are fortunately very sensitive to this stuff. Nexgard, Bravecto and Simparica. For you pineys, I...

Tick Ecology in NJ Pine Barrens?

You put an organophosphate on your dogs!? There are MUCH safer, effective things to use. Sorry about the repeated tick bites. How frustrating.

Possible Government Shut-down may affect your weekend..

I have never in my life. I really should not be surprised at all given our current cultural...issues. But for heaven's sake. REALLY!???

DL&W Oxford and "Manunka Chunk" tunnels

Thanks for digging up this old thread, it's one of my fonder memories of exploring NJ with my husband. We were brave and stupid enough to walk all the way through the tunnel and back. I get the romanticizing, it truly was another world, like a rainforest. Plus there were fish in the tunnels...

Possible Government Shut-down may affect your weekend..

The very last thing I want to do is to get into a political discussion! Let's just leave it at my disappointment at the timing of this event.

Possible Government Shut-down may affect your weekend..

These people are not representing the citizens of NJ. It is a shameful, dramatic hissy fit for which the people now have to bear the burden. I am just disgusted with the lot of them.

Possible Government Shut-down may affect your weekend..

Plus businesses rely on this holiday weekend as a significant source of income. He is reprehensible.

The tick that makes people allergic to red meat with one bite seems to be spreading

Someone brought me a lone star tick to identify last week, she found it attached to her here in Michigan, and she had not been out of the state. We haven't seen those here until now. They are most definitely spreading. As a result, we're also seeing an increase in the spread of bobcat fever in...

    Rattlesnake

I saw this today on the AVMA website. It is disturbing information, I hope it does not get out of hand. Have any of you seen any snakes with lesions on them? http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/06/snake-fungal-disease-treatment-conservation/

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

You are probably seeing a lot of ticks because....there are a lot of ticks. There seems to be a glut in populations nationwide this spring. I bet we will see a spike in Lyme/B. Miyamotoi/ehrlichiosis/RMSF, etc. Ticks are jerks.

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

Great photo! Questing is multifactorial. CO2 is CO2 to a tick no matter where it comes from (they have these great little sensors in their legs), but there are other attractants that hosts give off. Every species has different attractant criteria. Vibrations, light and dark, movement, etc, can...
